ChatGPT enters Epic and moves closer to the heart of the consultation

OpenAI is allowing healthcare organisations to connect authorised context from Epic and consult nine public sources through ChatGPT for Healthcare. The move promises to reduce searching and improve preparation for appointments, but shifts the debate from text quality to permissions, evidence and clinical responsibility.

A complex medical record forces clinicians to jump between notes, lab results, medication, specialist reports and previous appointments. The new integration brings together this authorised context to answer questions such as what has changed since the last visit, which recent results need reviewing or which follow-ups remain outstanding. It can work with the medical record within ChatGPT or integrate assistance into the clinical interface itself. The promise is not to replace diagnosis, but to reduce the time spent locating and synthesising information.

The second component is a public data add-on with structured access to nine official sources. These include PubMed, ClinicalTrials.gov, DailyMed, RxNorm and Medicare and Medicaid coverage. This makes it possible to compare trial inclusion criteria, confirm versions of a drug information sheet or review a coverage policy without visiting each portal separately. Combining patient data with external evidence is powerful because it brings the answer closer to the actual decision. It also amplifies the harm if an outdated source, the wrong person or an inference presented as fact is mixed in.
